Siegfried the Stegosaurus, who went AWOL from the EcoTarium to take a ramble through downtown Worcester, is now safely back home, and a book chronicling his adventures was unveiled earlier this summer -

The book about Siegfried's odyssey was born when Ann "Cookie" Nelson, who designs the EcoTarium's annual fund materials, learned from EcoTarium President Stephen Pitcher that this year the museum would have a new exhibit, DinoTracks. "Whatever happened," she asked Steve, "to Siegfried, the dinosaur that my children loved when the museum was on Elm and Cedar Streets?" She learned that until very recently, Siegfried, a life-sized sculpture, had been exiled to a spot in the woods on the EcoTarium's grounds, but that now he was located in a more prominent position near the museum entrance.

What if Siegfried, discontented at being alone in the woods, had decided to walk away from the EcoTarium and explore Worcester, visiting the city's famous landmarks? That thought has turned into a colorful children's book written by Cookie Nelson and illustrated by Michael McMenemy, a Worcester artist and graduate of the Pratt Institute whose whimsical illustrations brought Siegfried and the sights of Worcester to life. And what did happen to Siegfried when he ran away? He investigated Mechanics Hall, the Worcester Art Museum, the restaurants of Shrewsbury Street and lots more. REVIEW: The Surprising Story of the Three Little Pigs

Since I was a little girl, I have heard the stories of the Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and The Three Bears. But never have I seen such a wonderful story of all three tales put together in once fantastic children’s show.
This morning, I took my 4-year-old son Thomas along with my 1-year-old son Derek to see Foothills Theatre production of The Surprising Story of the Three Little Pigs and it was a wonderful show. My sons had never experienced live theater before and certainly never heard the story of the Three Pigs like this.
And as a special treat, we sat only a few rows from the stage (it’s a small theater setting, perfect for little ones), and boy did my sons enjoy that. Thomas sat quietly in his seat mesmerized by the antics of the pigs, the wolf, the goats, the troll, and goldilocks and the three bears.
The show was funny, age appropriate, and entertaining for children of all ages, and even with some jokes thrown in for the adults in the audience, as well. Derek, my 1-year-old, even enjoyed the twist on an old classic tale as well as all the laughing and running around of the actors.
And as a special treat after the show, the entire cast was available to meet the children and sign autographs. That is definitely something you can’t experience on Broadway. And each of the actors was engaging with the children after the show – and boy did Thomas love meeting all the characters after the show.
While I’ve seen theater productions growing up and even as an adult, the Children’s Theater productions at Foothills are a great way to introduce little ones to the theater and entertain them as well. I can’t wait to see Mother Goose, which will be playing July 22nd to August 2nd.

Stroller Strides to Launch First Fit4Bay Prenatal FitnessClasses

For the past seven years, Stroller Strides has supported thousands of women through new motherhood with its postnatal mom-and-baby fitness program. This fall, the family-friendly exercise company will extend its same supportive services to the pregnant client, with its launch of Fit4Baby – an exclusive prenatal fitness program developed by Stroller Strides.
“We’ve long anticipated this expansion into prenatal fitness,” says Lisa Druxman, founder of Stroller Strides. “There is still quite a bit of misinformation out there in regard to exercise during pregnancy, and our clients can rest assured that we are well-versed in the latest research and recommendations pertaining to this important population of women, and are therefore able to offer the safest and most effective program to date.”
Like Stroller Strides, Fit4Baby will offer a total body interval workout including strength training, cardio and flexibility exercises that can be completed in either an outdoor or indoor environment. Athletic Parents Sought for Annual Pledge Competition to Raise Money for the Life is good Kids Foundation

World’s Greatest Backyard Athlete to be Crowned at Life is good® Festival July 19 on Boston Common

It may be too late to qualify for the Olympic games in Beijing but there is still time to take the field for a storied athletic competition. The World’s Greatest Backyard Athlete competition will once again be the centerpiece event at the annual Life is good Festival on Saturday, July 19 on Boston Common.
More than 100 individuals will compete in this friendly, low-key competition for the coveted title while raising funds for the Life is good Kids Foundation. Proceeds from this year’s festival will be directed by the foundation to Project Joy, a Boston-based non-profit organization whose mission is to use the healing power of play to transform children impacted by violence, poverty and loss into healthy and joyful players in the game of life.

Strawberry Frappe - serves 2
Ingredients: 1 cup nonfat yogurt,
1 cup nonfat milk
1 cup (packed) fresh strawberry slices
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups ice cubes
Method: Purée yogurt, milk, strawberries, and vanilla in blender until smooth. Add ice cubes; puree until mixture is thick and smooth. Divide between 2 glasses and serve.

Summer Strawberry and Spinach Salad - serves 6
Salad Ingredients:
12 cups Baby Spinach, washed
½ cup Almonds, sliced and toasted
3 cups Strawberries, washed and quartered
1 ½ cups Bleu Cheese
1 cup Yellow Bell Tomatoes, halved
Dressing Ingredients:
4 oz. Balsamic Vinegar
½ tsp. Dijon Mustard
¼ clove fresh Garlic, minced
1 sprig Thyme, fresh and finely chopped
1 tsp. Granulated Sugar
1 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
¼ tsp. Salt and Pepper

Dressing Method: In a 4 quart bowl whisk in vinegar, mustard, garlic, thyme, and sugar. Slowly whisk in oil so that the oil and vinegar emulsifies. Season with 3 pinches salt and 1 pinch of black pepper.
Salad Method: Mix spinach with almonds, blue cheese and portion uniformly into each salad bowl. Add strawberries to salad and garish with bell tomatoes around the rim of salad bowl. Finish salad by drizzling dressing over salad.

Fresh Strawberry and Meyer Lemon Curd Crepe - makes 8 8 Crepes
Crepe Ingredients:
7 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter, Melted, Cooled, Divided
1 Cup Whole Milk
1 Cup All Purpose Flour
2 Large Eggs
6 Tablespoons Sugar, Divided
Meyer Lemon Curd Ingredients:
½ Cup plus 1 Tablespoon Sugar
3 Tablespoons All Purpose Flour
½ Teaspoon Salt
1 Teaspoon Grated Lemon Zest plus ¾ cup of fresh lemon juice
1 Large Egg Yolk
1 Tablespoon unsalted Butter
3 Cups sliced Fresh Strawberries
Confectioners Sugar

Method:
Step One: Lemon Curd
Whisk together, sugar, flour, and salt in a sauce pan.
Add lemon juice, whisking until combined.
Bring to boil, whisk constantly, simmer, whisking, until thickened, about 3 minutes
Remove from heat.
Whisk yolk in a small bowl, add a quarter of the lemon juice while whisking. Add remaining lemon juice mixture and boil for 1 minute.
Remove from heat.
Stir in butter and lemon zest.
Transfer to a clean bowl and cover surface with buttered parchment paper
Chill.
Step Two: Crepes
Reserve 1 tablespoon of butter for skillet
Blend milk, flour, eggs, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons of butter and ¼ teaspoon salt in blender until smooth. Chilled covered for 30 minutes
Brush non stick skillet with remaining butter and place on stove to medium heat. Pour ¼ cup of batter in pan and tilt to cover entire bottom of the pan. Cook until lightly golden, flip with spatula until just cooked on second side.
Remove to plate, hold warm
Repeat until all batter is utilized.
Step 3: Plating the crepe
Place crepe on 8" plate, spread 2 Tablespoons of Lemon Curd over the crepe, fold over (ensure lightly browned side is on the outside), repeat for remaining portions, spoon strawberries over crepes, dividing evenly. Dust with powdered sugar. Serve immediately.

Siegfried the Stegosaurus, who recently went AWOL from the EcoTarium to take a ramble through downtown Worcester, is now safely back home, and a book chronicling his adventures will be launched on Thursday, June 19 with a party and book signing at the Worcester museum.
The book about Siegfried's odyssey was born when Ann "Cookie" Nelson, who designs the EcoTarium's annual fund materials, learned from EcoTarium President Stephen Pitcher that this year the museum would have a new exhibit, DinoTracks. "Whatever happened," she asked Steve, "to Siegfried, the dinosaur that my children loved when the museum was on Elm and Cedar Streets?"
She learned that until very recently, Siegfried, a life- sized sculpture, had been exiled to a spot in the woods on the EcoTarium's grounds, but that now he was located in a more prominent position near the museum entrance.
What if Siegfried, discontented at being alone in the woods, had decided to walk away from the EcoTarium and explore Worcester, visiting the city's famous landmarks? That thought has turned into a colorful children's book written by Cookie Nelson and illustrated by Michael McMenemy, a Worcester artist and graduate of the Pratt Institute whose whimsical illustrations brought Siegfried and the sights of Worcester to life.
The EcoTarium is celebrating the publication of Siegfried with a party and book signing on Thursday, June 19 at the EcoTarium, 222 Harrington Way, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The party is free and includes light refreshments and a chance to chat with the creators of the book. Siegfried will cost $10.95 and will be sold at the EcoTarium's Museum Store and other local shops.

June 29: Stitch N' Pitch Event

The Sheep Shack will present the First "Stitch N' Pitch" on Sunday, June 29 at 105 p.m. at the Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Worcester.
Fans of baseball and The Five Needle Arts -- knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, embroidery, and needlepoint -- will sit together as a group and cheer on the Worcester Tornadoes, due to host the Quebec Les Capitales.
Tickets to participate in this celebration of two timeless American traditions are $9 and are available only at The Sheep Shack; seating is limited and tickets are first-come, first-served.
"It made sense to bring two of the biggest passions together in one afternoon," confirmed Christina Lentz Larsen, proprietor, The Sheep Shack. "So many needle artists work feverishly through the professional sports playoffs, through the Olympics, and during their kids' team games. Since we are so fortunate to have a great Minor League team right here in Worcester, why not play ball and be creative at the same time . . . and, do some good charity work while we're at it!"
Billed as "The Perfect Double Play," "Stitch N' Pitch" events – a program of The National Needle Arts Association (TNNA) – are popping up in increasing numbers all around North America. The June 29th event in Worcester is the first in Central MA, and a unique treat for all New Englanders.

CHARITABLE EFFORT
At the Sunday, June 29th Stitch N' Pitch, participants are asked to work on a community charity project while enjoying the game. The selected project is to create handmade PIC line covers to donate to Worcester-area hospitals. (A PIC line allows repeated doses of intravenous [IV] fluid to be administered without having to repeatedly stick a needle in a vein. This is helpful when one has been told to administer IV antibiotics daily for six weeks.) During times of inactivity, the PIC line is covered to keep it from catching or pulling out, and it provides privacy to patients wearing short sleeves. The Stitch N' Pitch attendees will make colorful and creative PIC line covers, which The Sheep Shack will then distribute to area hospitals.

WEEKEND PICK: Pandas Arrive at Davis' Farmland

Davis' Farmland welcomes it's newest breed today ... PANDAS! Actually, they are Miniature Panda Cattle. Best of all, the family of three has now expanded to a family of four. On Tuesday, June 3rd a beautiful baby panda was born! There are only 47 panda cows in the world. Consider making a a visit to the farm this weekend,to see the miniature panda cattle.

Miniature Pandas are a new breed of cattle, making them extremely rare. The breed originates from Washington State in North America. This small-sized breed of cattle is colored black and white like a panda. They are a mixture of 75% Irish Dexter (small size), and 25% Belted Galloway (black and white color). The Mom's name is O'Malley, the Dad's name is Orlando, and they have a daughter named Ling Ling.
Their new baby girl is just one of the many babies born here this season. She will join our new Miniature Sicilian donkey "Donkey-Odie", baby alpaca "Cocoa," and baby llama "Llama Bean," in Farmland's Animal Showcase.

Boston Children's Museum Receives LEED Gold Certification

Boston Children’s Museum is excited to announce that it recently achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
It is the first “green” museum in Boston.
Today, Friday, May 16, at 4 p.m. the Museum will unveil its LEED plaque at a ceremony attended by City of Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
According to the U.S. Green Building Council, “The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.” To be named LEED Gold certified, a building must meet stringent standards for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, indoor environmental quality and innovative design
During its renovation and expansion, Boston Children’s Museum used recycled and rapidly renewable materials and added a green roof, storm water reclamation system and real-time heating and cooling controls. The Museum also replaced its ambient light fixtures with highly efficient fixtures and trained housekeeping staff on the proper way to store, use, and dispose of chemicals, paper products and other materials
“Boston Children's Museum has long been a leader in setting the gold standard for hands-on exhibits and early childhood education programs,” Janet Rice Elman, Executive Director of the Association of Children’s Museums, says. “Achieving LEED Gold certification is the mark of high performance and advances the strong green trend in the children's museum field.”
Since reopening its newly renovated and expanded “green” building last year, the new Boston Children’s Museum has become a Green Town Square showcasing citywide environmental initiatives for young children and their families. Two of these initiatives are Green at Home and the Green Trail.
Green at Home, sponsored by National Grid through a $100,000 grant, is a series of “green fairs” that educate visitors about the ways they can decrease their impact on the environment.
Green Trail, sponsored by Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation through a $250,000 grant, will provide an interpretative experience onsite to tell the story of the museum’s green building.
Boston Children’s Museum believes that these initiatives will create a green-from-the-start mentality in its young visitors.

Worcester Teen Crowned Miss Massachusetts Junior Teen

Jazmin Hampton of Worcester, has been crowned Miss Massachusetts Junior Teen United States and will go onto compete in the Miss Junior Teen United States 2008 Pageant in July. The pageant will be held in Las Vegas at the Orleans Hotel where state delegates from around the country will come to compete for the coveted title and prize package.

The Delegates will compete in three segments: interview, swimsuit and evening gown and the over-all winner will be crowned Miss Junior Teen United States 2008.

As a Titleholder, Miss Hampton must also embrace a personal charity of her choice, as well as The American Heart Association ‘s Go Red for Women Campaign, the Pageant’s official charity platform. She will also be competing for the Supermodel Award which is separate from the pageant. The winner will be featured in the nationally renowned Supermodel magazine.

In addition to excelling in school and keeping active in the community, Jazmin is a student at Abby Kelley Foster School where she is a member of the National Honor Society and captain of the cheerleading squad. She is an accomplished singer and pianist.

As Miss Massachusetts Junior Teen, Jazmin is committed to being an excellent role model and spokesperson for all young girls everywhere.

The Miss Junior Teen United States Pageant is the sister pageant to Mrs. United States Pageant. Jazmin was sponsored by Chickee’s Dance World and friends.

There is still time to sign up for the Applewild Summer Adventure Camp at the Applewild School in Fitchburg.
