Athletic Parents Sought for Annual Pledge Competition to Raise Money for the Life is good Kids Foundation
.
It may be too late to qualify for the Olympic games in Beijing but there is still time to take the field for a storied athletic competition. The World’s Greatest Backyard Athlete competition will once again be the centerpiece event at the annual Life is good Festival on Saturday, July 19 on Boston Common.
More than 100 individuals will compete in this friendly, low-key competition for the coveted title while raising funds for the Life is good Kids Foundation. Proceeds from this year’s festival will be directed by the foundation to Project Joy, a Boston-based non-profit organization whose mission is to use the healing power of play to transform children impacted by violence, poverty and loss into healthy and joyful players in the game of life.
The pledge-driven competition, sponsored by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, features men and women putting their skills to the test through a number of old-fashioned backyard games including Frisbee toss, bocce, watermelon seed spitting, and Wiffle Ball Homerun Derby. Competing athletes commit to raise at least $1,000 for the Life is good Kids Foundation. The top fundraiser will win a three night stay at the Four Points by Sheraton Palmas del Mar Resort in Puerto Rico. To sign up for the World’s Greatest Backyard Athlete competition, visit the Life is good® website at www.lifeisgood.com/festivals.
“Our Backyard Athlete competition is great fun for the athletes and the crowds that cheer them on, and it’s backed by a serious purpose,” said Bert Jacobs, Chief Executive Optimist for Life is good. “The World’s Greatest Backyard Athlete Competition gives each athlete a day of smiles along with the deep satisfaction of raising major funds for an organization that works to bring joy back into the lives of children in need. Even if you don’t end up with the title, everyone wins in this competition.”

WEEKEND PICK: Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition's Against The Tide Fundraiser is Saturday
Dates and venues for the 2008 Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s Against the Tide one-mile swim, two-mile kayak and three mile fitness walk:
* 16th Annual Metro Boston
7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 21, at Hopkinton State Park
(Directions are below)
* 9th Annual Cape Cod
7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, August 16 at Nickerson State Park in Brewster
“Against The Tide” is a 1-mile swim, 2-mile kayak, and 3-mile fitness walk to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. This fun and inspirational statewide program brings swimmers, kayakers, and walkers of all ages and abilities together with Coalition in efforts to stop the breast cancer epidemic. Participants from all over New England commit to raising a minimum contribution of $150, which must be donated on the day of the event, in order to participate in the festivities. Participants may enroll in one or as many events as they would like. All funds raised go directly to breast cancer prevention through the advocacy work of Coalition and research initiatives of its sister environmental organization, Silent Spring Institute. Registration materials, sponsor information, and fundraising ideas can be found at www.mbcc.org/swim.
“Against the Tide is not a big, corporate show, but an event that celebrates families and individuals of all ages and abilities coming together to truly end this epidemic,” says Executive Director Deborah Shields; “It is empowering and uplifting to know that we are contributing towards a healthier future; one in which our mothers, daughters, and friends will not have to fear that they will be the one in seven diagnosed with breast cancer.”
Breast cancer now strikes more women in the world than any other type of cancer. In the past 50 years, the lifetime risk of breast cancer has nearly tripled in the United States. In the 1940’s, a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer was 1 in 22. In the year 2002, the risk was 1 in 8 and is presently 1 in 7. The increasing prevalence reinforces the necessity to reverse the trend and prevent breast cancer from occurring in the first place.
Bay State Parent magazine will publish its 2nd Annual Think Pink Guide, with a focus on breast cancer awareness & inspiration stories in October 2008. The first Think Pink guide won national awards.
.
The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is a nonprofit organization committed to stopping the breast cancer epidemic in Massachusetts through activism, advocacy, research and education. Founded in 1991, the focus of the Coalition is to find the causes of breast cancer and seek real prevention against this devastating disease.

Shake It For Shelter Event is This Saturday in Lexington
This special event will be a festive evening of dancing, bidding and good fun – all for a great cause – ending family homelessness.
With rockin’ live music, a dazzling auction and food and drink that fit the mood, Shake It for Shelter has become the annual go-to event for more than 600 Lexingtonians and friends from neighboring towns. Since 2002, more than 1,500 individuals and businesses have participated in Shake It for Shelter.
COMPASS for homeless families benefits from the funds raised at Shake It for Shelter.
This unique program provides homeless families in Greater Boston direct services that support family self-sufficiency, adult and child development and family/parenting strength. COMPASS partners with myriad advocates and organizations committed to ending family homelessness.
Funds are needed to meet the growing demand for COMPASS services.
Over the past year
family homelessness has become more critical as the number of homeless families across Massachusetts and in the shelters we serve has risen by close to 30%.
In addition, several additional Boston and Greater Boston shelters eagerly await COMPASS programs, as part of the recent state mandate to end family homelessness. They need additional resources to give homeless families the tools they need to cope with life in the shelter and to succeed in life after the shelter. Your participation will ensure the success of Shake It for Shelter.
The organizers rely upon generous contributions from corporate and individual sponsors, auction donors and community volunteers. We hope you will be a part of this community-wide effort to end the cycle of family homelessness.

Wide Horizons For Children Creates Emergency Fund for Earthquake Relief in China
The Waltham-based agency is seeking donations to the fund, which will be used to help children affected by the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck western China last Monday.
Reports show 50,000 people are dead, buried, or missing.
The impact on orphanages is not yet completely known as many of the most affected facilities are in hard-to-access areas. Wide Horizons is working with its partner in China to find more information on the status of children and to identify the most pressing emergency needs arising from the earthquake and aftershocks in western China.
The fund will provide both emergency and long-term relief to children in orphanages and children who have been separated from their families, orphaned, physically hurt and emotionally traumatized. Depending on the specific needs, funds could be used for food, trauma counseling, medical care and emergency shelter as well as to repair or rebuild institutions that may have suffered structural damage.

4th Annual Janis Bresnahan 5K Run For Education is Saturday
“The AEF and the Janis Bresnahan run have become an incredibly important part of the fabric of the Ayer school community,” said George Frost, Superintendent, Ayer Public Schools. “The race is truly an event of community significance, and the funds raised allow AEF to offer teacher grants which enhance the educational experiences of our children.”
“We are very excited about the 4th annual run. The event has been a great success both in bringing the community and Janis's friends and family together, and it has managed to raise an amazing $100,000 for the Ayer Education Foundation in its first three years,” said Ben Bresnahan.” This year we made some changes to the format, taking the run from a 5-mile to a 5K and the walk from 3 miles to 2 miles, based on feedback and in the hopes of increasing participation. Thank you to everyone for making this such a great success in memory of our sister Janis.”
The annual run for education is in memory of Janis Bresnahan. Janis was born on May 15, 1971, and spent most of her life growing up in the town of Ayer and graduated from Ayer High School in 1989. Janis was an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed running, cycling and boating. She was co-captain of the Ayer High School women's track team in her senior year, and then went on to dedicate her life and work to the education of children.
“We are honored to be part of the Fourth Annual Janis Bresnahan 5K Run for Education. The Bresnahan Family & Friends are truly an inspiration for us, and AEF is so grateful to be the recipients of funds raised from the run,” noted Sheila Kelly, Co-President, Ayer Education Foundation. “This event has become an important town-wide event that not only remembers Janis Bresnahan and all that she contributed to education and children, but it serves as a reminder of how people can pull together for the greater good of our school district and all the children in our town.”
The Fourth Annual Janis Bresnahan 5K Run for Education will feature a competitive 5K run throughout the picturesque town of Ayer, as well as a 2-mile, non-competitive walk and a fun-filled Tot Trot for children up to age 6.
